What is SEO? (Search engine optimization): The process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s unpaid results – often referred to as “natural,” “organic,” or “earned” results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search, news search and industry-specific vertical search engines.
The leading search engines, such as Google, Bing and Yahoo!, use crawlers to find pages for their algorithmic search results. Pages that are linked from other search engine indexed pages do not need to be submitted because they are found automatically. Two major directories, the Yahoo Directory and DMOZ both require manual submission and human editorial review. Google offers Google Webmaster Tools, for which an XML Sitemap feed can be created and submitted.
As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, what people search for, the actual search terms or keywords typed into search engines and which search engines are preferred by their targeted audience. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content, HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.
What does that mean in layman’s? When a person is using a search engine they type in what they are trying to find. For example “cheapest pizza in town” the search engine will return the result for the most relevant websites for that phrase or the keywords typed in. The sites with the highest rank for those terms, phrases, and keywords will be shown on the first result page on the search engine. Based on how much On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO has been done to those websites determines how high those sites rank. The higher ranked your site is the more people will see it on the first page of the search engine. That leads to more clicks to your site which will bring more traffic to your site and potentially turn them into clients.
The goal with SEO is to get your website the highest rank for the terms, keywords, and phrases in the search engine. You want your site to come up first on the result page for your business or product so you get more site visitors that you can generate leads from and turn into potential clients .
